Alas..... The 41 year long run (since 1968) of the Fashion Island Summer Concerts has ended,  they will not be held this Summer.  Southern California's longest running Summer Concert Series is no more.  A spokesperson from Fashion Island said that there were two reasons the concerts were scrubbed -- there is construction going on at both ends of FI, and they couldn't find a concert sponsor.  So maybe next year......

In the meantime, our good friend Gerald Ishibashi, the long time producer of the F.I. shows, has been cooking up a music series to be held on Wednesday Nights in the Palm Garden/old Twin Palms by the Islands Hotel in Fashion Island.   He's got some great shows booked for August 12-26, three Wednesday Night concerts:

Wednesday, August 12        Pancho Sanchez
Wednesday, August 19        Dave Mason
Wednesday, August 26        Carlos Santana Tribute

Gerald
says:  "The Rendezvous Series is meant to fill a niche in OC entertainment. We wanted to create a series for people who wanted a fabulous night of entertainment on a more personal level. The big arena marketplace is taken care of - what we felt OC audiences needed was a venue where you can surround yourself with friends and family and enjoy a night of first-class music in a more intimate and community-based setting".

Tickets at $20 or $30 VIP seating.  Doors open 5:30pm with a Happy Hour Menu and no-host bar, and Shows begin at 7pm.  To order tickets and more information go to www.rendevouzroad.com  or call 949.690.4412   See you there !!!!

Magic Castle in Hollywood
August 24-30    Dinner time, evening entertainment in Hollywood

Here's something that's special.......  the Magic Castle in Hollywood.  Built in 1908 in the hills above Hollywood in an authentic Victorian mansion,  The Magic Castle is the clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts, an organization devoted to the advancement of the ancient art of magic.  It's members-only, and you have to be a professional magician or somehow be involved with magic in show business to be a member - very hard to get in.  It's a major entertainment venue for magic acts, where guests can have dinner, watch all types of magic performed, and explore this very unique place.  Ask anyone who has been there - it's a very memorable evening.  Think Norman Bates crosses David Copperfield, up close...  spooky and cool all in one.

My friend John George is a Professional Magician and member,  and he can get you on the guest list as long as we don't overwhelm the place.  He is performing there this week, doing close up magic.   Look for John in the close-up gallery….. prepare to be amazed !!   Special this time - the Show on Tuesday, August 25 will by "Young Adults Night" so those under 21 can attend... a very special performance !!  Checkout the information on his website at www.johngeorge.com then email John George if you want to make reservations at magic@johngeorge.com and he'll get you set up.  Here is the venue website with information www.magiccastle.com/

10th Annual Cruisin' for a Cure  -  Fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Research
Saturday, September 26   7am-5pm    OC Fair and Events Center

The 10th  annual "Cruisin' for a Cure" fund-raiser for Prostate Cancer Research will be Saturday, Sept. 26th  from 7:00 a.m. (gulp) to 5 p.m. at the Orange County Fairgrounds.  Organizers expect the hot rod and motorcycle event to be the World’s largest charity car show,  with all money raised to benefit the UCLA Johnson Cancer Center Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research.  The event will feature more than 1,500 customs, classics, muscle cars, specialty vehicles and trucks, as well as more than 1,500 motorcycles.   Also on view will be 400 Corvettes, 200 Mustangs and 150 PT Cruisers.   I checked the website a few minutes ago and they already have lots of entries - they had 3,300 vehicles last year.  They have already sold out most all of the 215 Vendors spots.  Lotsa prizes too.... this will be HUGE !!!!

Men are encouraged to receive a free PSA test at the show.  Prostate Cancer will strike over 189,000 men this year alone. Of these men, over 31,000 will die. That
’s one man every 12½ minutes! Husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers…. in many cases it could have been prevented with regular precautionary checkups.  We men tend to figure, “it won’t happen to me” or, “well, I’m busy now, but I’ll check into it later”. Later could be too late. After all, don’t we regularly do tune ups and other precautionary work on our cars in the hope of preventing major repairs later? Your body deserves no less. And the truth is, the testing is painless, not embarrassing, and could save your life. Just ask any of the guys you will see at the show wearing the blue “Survivors” shirts. They will tell it to you straight.  Last year, over 900 men were tested at the Cruise. Of these, 52 were discovered to have a high count and instructed to see their doctor for further testing.  Somebody watchin’ out for them.....

Admission is only $12, kids under 13 free, register and display your buggy for $40 in advance.  For information call (949) 752-5115 Ext 10 or visit the website at www.cruisinforacure.com  It’s all there, great site.....

>>>   Canaletto Ristorante Veneto in Fashion Island opened in November, and everyone loves it !!!!  This much anticipated member of the Il Fornaio family is on the pad of the former Tutto Mare Ristorante.  Drawing its flavors from the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, Canaletto's sophisticated Italian ambiance are highlighted by gracious and abundant hospitality, five-star service at every table and a diverse menu featuring choices for every taste.  Canaletto is owned and operated by Il Fornaio, renowned for its award-winning Italian restaurants, bakeries and full-service catering.   More information contact Canaletto at (949) 640-0900 or at www.ilfornaio.com or Fashion Island at www.shopfashionisland.com

>>>  The Resort at Pelican Hill opened softly and all reports are that it is magnificent.  Two years in the making, it's for well heeled locals and travelers alike, with room/villa rates in the $695 range.  We caught a couple of the opening parties, very very nice   www.PelicanHill.com

>>> After two years of sweat and tears, bumps and grinds.... The Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach reopened in December.  Special events planned every night.  This venerable landmark on the water side of PCH in N. Laguna is sure to please with extensive remodeling and decor.  Still a little Tiki'd but in this century.  Check it out, 331 N. Coast Highway in Laguna  (949) 494-8001

>>>  25 Degrees is a successful restaurant concept located in the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.  Tim and Lisa Goodell of A Restaurant and other fine properties are reaching out to Newport Beach and Phoenix, and this one will open soon in the space that was  Ristorante Max on Westcliff/19th Street.  The location in Hollywood is open until 1am and this one is planned to be open late, too .....  also open in Beijing, if you're in the neighborhood.....

>>>  This will be the place....  Crustacean Restaurant is opening soon in Bloomingdale's South Coast Plaza  The Beverly Hills Crustacean location has long been revered as an exquisite icon, with streams running inside, very unique decor.... along with Charlie Palmers, two hits for Bloomie's.....
Update
- we hear that the opening will be delayed until late summer.

 >>>  The Lumberyard opened on Forest x Forest in Laguna and has been getting good reviews from the yuppified crowd www.lblumberyard.com

>>>  The old Chanteclair / Z'Mario Restaurant on MacArthur near the airport has been rechristened iLounge, with completely new operators and an upscale Club/restaurant feel.  None other that mondo-hot MTV chart-toppers Schwayze performed there on opening night a few months .... Let's see where this goes, everyone hopes another club fires up hereabouts....   www.iloungeoc.com

>>>  Heat Ultra Lounge in the Garden Walk in Anaheim opened late last year, and it is everything as promised -  sensational 10,000 foot club with two rooms, superb sound system and terrific dance floor sight lines and mingling areas.  Like a Las Vegas or LA glitz club, without the long drive up and back.  That whole area just off the 5 Fwy x Katella is a real rocket, with big restaurants like Roy's, Cheesecake Factory and McCormick & Schmicks anchoring, and more coming.  Website www.heatultraloungeoc.com  Here's an LA Times review www.latimes.com/theguide/bars-and-clubs/la-gd-heat30-2008jul30,0,5315350.story

>>>  Rudy's Pub and Grill in Newport recently opened a second location in Foothill Ranch in November, and it's been packed since the first day.  On the corner of Portola Parkway right by the Tollway, phone (949) 581-0293

The Crow Bar

>>>  Don't get excited.... The parking lot resurfacing at the old Windows on the Bay on PCH in "downtown" Newport is there just to repair the aging exterior.  That building fosters many a rumor, but the latest we hear is that it, and the area surrounding, are still on the market for a well heeled bidder.   You can settle into  a dance with the city over permits if you pony up (we hear) around $ 80M for all that acreage....  that place has been closed for nigh onto 9 years for good reason....  yes, we know they are restriping the lot...... same difference....

>>> Lots of great new places have opened in The District at Tustin Legacy, by Jamboree and Barranca near the old Tustin military base.  Strike OC is very fun and lively upscale Bowling, sports and games, food and full bar, the works !!!  And many other cool places there are open and in the process...  lots of restaurants and activity most nights....

>>> The Black Bull Chop House in Downtown Huntington Beach has been open for a while and is packing them in.  A mix of good American food, a little country, lots of mingling and dancing most nights, and one of those dare-u-to-ride-'em mechanical bulls right in the middle of it all.  Much fun, casual and jumpin'.....  www.blackbullchophouse.com

>>>  The A Restaurant has opened in the old Arches space by Newport x PCH.  I wonder who came up with that name ....  here's the website www.arestaurantnb.com   Good mingling scene around the bar, older crowd....

>>> Charlie Palmer's at Bloomingdale's in South Coast Plaza has opened with great fanfare, presenting a New Yawk vibe and cosmopolitan cool.  We'll see how that plays with the local OC crowd.  I hear the Tuesday wine tasting is very cool, worth a visit.....  this place has been named as one of the Top Ten new restaurants of 2008 by Gayot.....  they are serving small plate late night dinners for the nightowls....

>>> Jimmy Hopper is back at The Island Hotel in Fashion Island, wowing the local crowd 2 nights a week with his high energy and vast musical repertoire.  Jimmy also plays in the back patio of the Ritz Restaurant on Wednesday and Thursday nights.....

Pampered Mobile Spa

>>> Embers in Downtown Anaheim opened with much fanfare, and the pix sure make it look good.  It's a dance club with multiple themes, lets hope they get traction and make it happen in that area.

>>>  Our good friend Mario Marovic has revamped and redone the venerable Landmark Restaurant in Corona del Mar.  Gone is the dancing most nights and casual look, in favor of a more upscale feel with deep leather booths and rich wood paneling.  DJ dancing on Friday and Saturday, and it is packed with a local crowd.  Just had their 4th anniversary....   Website www.landmarknewport.com

>>> The Beachcomber Restaurant opened in the Crystal Cove Historic District last year, and has recently opened a new Bootlegger Bar.  They converted one of those rustic old beach cottages into a right-on-the-sand eatery, under the management of the Ruby's chain.  Breathtaking sunset views, casual and very romantic.   The Bar has a Pirate cove feel, with thatched roof and cedar paneling.  Open to the ocean, great place to take in the sale air while dining alfresco ..... but be prepared to wait, they don't take reservations.   Phone 949-376-6900 website www.thebeachcombercafe.com

>>>  Look for a whole slew of New Restaurants and shops in the area on the land side of PCH by Dover/PCH in Newport in the area called Bel Mare, where all those old closed buildings are.  The redevelopment will take awhile, but big things are coming there, several places and underground parking.  The latest word is that they are back at the design table after getting shot down for traffic improvements on PCH, too much of a bottleneck.  Stay tuned...  Update: They had permit problems that kept them tied up for a year, but they are clear and moving ahead on this project, although it has been downsized from the original plan.
